The DoP's Network Bandwidth Revamp : Upgrading NSP-1 Links for Seamless Operations

The Department of Posts is undertaking the Upgradation of NSP-1 links to a minimum of 2 Mbps (MPLS/VPNoBB).

In a significant move towards modernization and efficiency, the Department of Posts (DoP) is undertaking an ambitious project to upgrade the network infrastructure of its field units across the country. Recognizing the challenges faced by Post Offices and Mail Offices due to low network bandwidth, the DoP, in consultation with BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited), has taken the decisive step of upscaling the National Data Center (NSP-1) links to a minimum of 2 Mbps (MPLS/VPNoBB). This upgradation aims to bolster operations and streamline the delivery of postal services nationwide.

Addressing Network Constraints:

The DoP has been receiving feedback from various circles and the Parcel Directorate highlighting the difficulties in handling day-to-day operations due to inadequate network bandwidth. Slow connectivity often resulted in delays in tracking packages, accessing critical information, and hampered overall productivity. In response to these challenges, the DoP set forth a comprehensive plan to upgrade the existing infrastructure.

Collaborative Efforts with BSNL:

The DoP collaborated with BSNL, a leading telecommunications company in India, to ensure the successful implementation of this bandwidth upgradation project. After careful examination of the requirements and challenges, an in-principle approval was granted to upgrade the NSP-1 Links, including both MPLS and VPNoBB connections, to a minimum of 2 Mbps. This decision was aimed at overcoming network constraints and facilitating seamless communication between field units.

NSP1 MPLS Link Upgradation:

As a significant milestone in the project, the bandwidth of the NSP1 MPLS link at the Data Center (DC) and Disaster Recovery (DR) site was increased from the existing 1 Gbps to 2 Gbps. This enhancement is expected to alleviate the bottlenecks faced by field units and enhance data transmission and processing capabilities significantly.

BSNL's Commitment and Timely Actions:

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, BSNL took swift action and issued a directive to all Telecom Circles on July 24, 2023, mandating the immediate upgradation of existing lower bandwidth MPLS links (<2 Mbps) for the Department of Posts to the required 2 Mbps. Furthermore, BSNL is actively working on issuing similar directives for the upgradation of VPNoBB links.

Coordination and Monitoring:

As the bandwidth upgradation activity progresses, the DoP has called for seamless coordination with BSNL to ensure the smooth execution of the project. It is crucial for all Chief Postmasters General (CPMGs) to closely monitor the upgradation process in their respective circles and promptly report the progress to the Technology Division of the Department of Posts in New Delhi.

The upgradation of NSP-1 links to a minimum of 2 Mbps (MPLS/VPNoBB) marks a major stride towards empowering India's postal services with modern and efficient network infrastructure. This step is expected to overcome the challenges faced by field units, ensuring quicker and more reliable communication, and significantly improving overall service delivery. As the DoP and BSNL continue to work hand in hand, the future of India's postal services looks brighter than ever before.
